Shopify or a custom e-commerce build, which should you choose?

Published 15 July 2026

Should you build your store on Shopify or have a custom solution developed? The question comes up in almost every e-commerce project, and the answer is less religious than the debate suggests. Here is a practical comparison.

What Shopify is good at

Shopify solves the hard parts for you: secure checkout, payments, tax, inventory, discount codes and hosting. You get started quickly, the platform is proven at enormous scale and there are apps for most needs. For the vast majority of product companies this is the right starting point, energy goes into brand, product pages and marketing instead of infrastructure.

A common misconception is that Shopify stores must look like templates. With a custom theme and crafted design, a Shopify store can feel every bit as bespoke as a custom build, our client store pumpportable.com is an example where the entire buying experience runs on Shopify.

When a custom build wins

A custom e-commerce build earns its cost when the business model does not fit the standard flow: complex pricing models, subscriptions with special rules, heavy integrations with internal systems, or when the store is just one part of a larger digital product. Then you buy freedom, but also responsibility for everything Shopify would otherwise handle.

The cost in short

Shopify has a monthly fee and transaction fees, but a low starting cost and almost no maintenance. A custom build has no platform fee but a much higher development cost, and every new feature, security update and integration is your project. Over a three-year total cost, Shopify wins in most scenarios below mid-size scale.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is choosing a custom build because it feels more serious, then spending the whole budget on infrastructure Shopify would have included. The second most common is the opposite: forcing a genuinely special business model into Shopify with ten apps and fragile configuration. Both end up expensive.

Our recommendation

Selling physical products at normal scale? Start with Shopify and spend the budget on design, product story and traffic. If your business model breaks the standard flow, then, and only then, custom development is worth the money.
